Craft Room Organizing Tip for Card Makers

I love sharing craft room organizing tips with you!! I love finding new ways to organize my stamping and crafting supplies.  When I find something that really works well for me, I love sharing that idea with you.  If it works for you, great!   If you have another system in place, great - leave me a comment and tell me all about it! :)

I know you don't come here to see the "mess" so I'll just share the "after" photos of my newly organized box for storing parts and pieces that were all over my desk!  I bought this container at The Container Store (info below) and LOVE the sections of this container AND that it's wide enough to fit a card front or folded card/envelope!

 Organization tips for Card Makers:

Organizing Tips for Crafters and Card Makers featuring a 4 section Linus Packet Organizer from the Container Store.

I have 2 of these 4-section Linus Packet Organizers shown above (details below).

LEFT:  this one holds all of my essentials like Stampin' Dimensionals, pearls, doilies, gems, glitter dots, rhinestones, etc.

RIGHT: this one holds all the miscellaneous pieces that were scattered in containers all around my desk.  I have a section for pieces that will be used on a card, a section for partially completed cards, a section for card ideas, and in back, a section of stamped images ready to color.

I used my DYMO labeler to label dividers.  You can see file folder supplies from Staples that I used for the DIVIDERS IN THIS POST.

Craft room and card maker tip: create a container with dividers for all those unfinished card pieces! By Patty Bennett, www.PattyStamps.com

 Die Cut Storing Tip:

Below:  This is another great time saver/organizer I have in my craft room.  I also got this container at the Container store (this one was from a few years ago), and I was storing my essentials like dimensionals, pearls, rhinestones, etc., in it.. but I found it works so well for my stash of die cut pieces!!!!!!!

Multi Section Organizer is perfect for storing paper crafting and card making die cut pieces!! Patty Bennett www.PattyStamps.com

You may be asking why do I have so many die cuts?  I make 50 to 70 of each card design for customer thank you cards several times a month, so having this stash of die cuts is a huge time saver!  I do have a wonderful neighbor that helps me by doing some bulk die cutting, and it works out well for both of us!!

Multi Section Organizer is perfect for storing paper crafting and card making die cut pieces!! Patty Bennett www.PattyStamps.com

 Last Tip:

I have a little container for all the tiny extra die cut pieces that end up on my table.. then I go through it often to add that little extra special touch to a project!  This is just a Dollar Store plastic dish.. it doesn't have to be anything fancy, but I do find that "see through" is helpful for me.

How I organized my NEW Stampin' Up! ink pads!

This year I made a big change in my craft room and organized all of my Stampin' UP! cardstock, ink pads and reinkers in Rainbow Order!!  I have been thinking about it for years, and with the new color revamp this year, I decided rather than memorizing which colors were in which Stampin' UP! color families, I would just change to rainbow order!

Results: I LOVE IT!

ABOVE: my ink pad storage units from Stamp-n-Storage, show 2 styles of ink pad holders.  The one on the bottom is for the new style Stampin' UP! ink pads only (it won't fit the old style). The one on top is the old style (see this post), and holds the old and new style pads.   They offer MANY different styles of ink pad holders, and from June 8 to 18, 2018 you'll find some of them on sale at 15% off!

Above: I redid my reinkers into rainbow order as well!!  They are all in a drawer next to me as I craft, so I can easily grab them to reink my pads or use them for watercoloring techniques.  I used retired candy dots and glimmer dots, some colored with Stampin' Blends or Sharpie markers, to try to capture a color close to the ink color, then I wrote the name on the lid with a fine tip Sharpie.

Like I mentioned above, I LOVE the rainbow order for my supplies!   The great news is.. if you try it and you don't like it, it's so easy to change ... but for me, this was a GREAT change!  I love just being able to "browse the greens", or "browse the reds" at a glance!! :)

Trying out "Rainbow Order" this year

I'm trying something new this year!  Instead of organizing my Stampin' Up! cardstock in the 4 color families and In Colors in separate paper holders, I combined them all into one big rainbow!  I am LOVING my rainbow order cardstock organization so far!!! :)

As you may know, Stampin' Up! is taking the opportunity to revamp our color families in honor of their 30 Year Anniversary!!  Rather than put all my new colors into the new families, I decided to see how I'd like it in rainbow order!

Patty's Stampin' UP! Rainbow of Cardstock 2018 Color Revamp!

My inspiration came from Monica Gale.  Her cardstock is organized in one long horizontal rainbow row, but I don't have room to do that.. so this is how I have mine!

You can see Monica's rainbow list here.

You will notice that I modified my order a little from hers, because I put the white, vanilla, and neutrals on the left, separate from the rainbow.  I am LOVING this rainbow order so far!!  Do what works for you, and the great news is, you can change it around anytime! :)

I love my paper holders, see the Stamp-n-Storage 8-1/2x11 cardstock holders here

Be sure to click the option to include the 8-1/2x11 or 12x12 paper holder label system to match your paper holder size.. I find them super helpful.. here is how they look:

I have a fun tip that I hope will give you ideas for storing and organizing your crafting embellishments and accessories!

I recently brought all of the new Stampin' Up! embellishments and accessories to a demonstrator meeting for the display table, and rather than just put the packages on the table, I put all the darling products in sweet little white bowls from the Daiso Japan store!  They were only $1.50 each and made everything look so cute!

When I came home from this demonstrator meeting, I decided to leave all of the products in the cute bowls, gather them all into a tray (from the Container Store) and keep them at my stamping desk!!

  1. I thought this should help keep them organized
  2. I hope it will encourage me to grab them and USE THEM!
  3. I can see at a glance what is running low

One tip I shared in the video above was to go ahead and take all of the wood embellishment pieces out of the wood sheets.. this way I KNOW I will grab them and use them.. and in fact I already have!

How I Distressed Pine Boards for Photo Backgrounds

If you follow me on Facebook, you probably saw the fun pile of pine wood boards that my neighbor left by my front door.  Many of you asked what I was going to do with them?  Well, they are for the backgrounds of my blog post projects!!

HOWEVER, I came across a little issue....  the pine is so "yellow" that it fools my camera and it makes all the photos really yellow, which require a ton of photoshoping to make them look better.. so.. I decided to buy some paint and start painting and distressing the yellow-ish pine boards to make them look more interesting and a little bit like they'd been weathered for a long time!

How to distress wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

The boards were single left over pine planks from who knows what project.. and my neighbor (handy-dandy woodshop neighbor) glued them together into larger pieces.. he sanded them and did the beveled edges on them too!!  It's so great to have handy friends!!!! :)

You can see from the photo below, that the pine boards I found in our garden shed, are quite yellow, and after my "distressing process" I managed to make them all look totally different!

How to distress wood pine planks pattystamps before

Before and After: How to distress wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

After Distressing wood pine boards by Patty Bennett at www.pattystamps.com

I really should have looked on Youtube before I started this process, but I just dove right in with some bottles of acrylic paint, old paint brushes, an old toothbrush, foam brushes, sand paper and old rags.

It was about a 3 day process as I was trying to get the house decorated for Christmas at the same time, and couldn't devote all my time to this project.

My (totally amateur) process to distress the wood:

  1. start with a wash of paint (acrylic paint watered down) and applied with a foam brush
  2. sand when dry
  3. add a 2nd color the same way as #1
  4. sand when dry
  5. add a 3rd color with a very dry paint brush to give the appearance of wood grain (with a light touch)
  6. sand when dry
  7. evaluate... like it? stop!  needs more color? (probably!) :) add more colors either as a wash or with a dry paintbrush
  8. add paint speckles or streaks with the toothbrush dipped in paint
  9. distress wood with wire brush, coarse sand paper, or anything that will rough it up a bit
  10. apply more paint
  11. sand again
  12. ya, you get the idea... you could do this for days....  I had to make myself stop!

Notes:

For the blue ones, I started with white paint and added blue, then added more white

For the light ones, I started with white paint and added hints of gray, black and brown (with a very dry brush)

For the dark ones, I started with brown paint, and added white, gray and black paint

On some of the boards, I dipped my rag into water then into paint and kind of washed over the boards.

I basically experimented with every possible combination I could think of. :)

When I am ready to photograph my craft projects, I place them on a board and take photos, as you can see below:

I experiment with different boards depending on the color and size of the project, then crop the photo and add my watermark as shown below.

My new 12x12 Paper Storage

I recently made some updates to my Stampin' Up! 12x12 Designer Series Paper storage in my stamp loft.  I learned about these great Storage Studio plastic sleeves from my friend Cindee, and several of you commented on them in my Holiday Catalog Sneak Peek video (see it here).

As promised, here is the info and update on how well these "Storage Studio" Paper Files work in my Stamp-n-Storage Paper Holders!  I replaced the old 12x12 holders I had with the Stamp-n-Storage paper holders to match my 8-1/2 x 11 holders, and I'm so happy with my paper wall of happiness!

My New Stamp-n-Storage Ink Pad Holders!

I'm so excited to share my newly organized Stampin' UP! ink pad storage system with you, featuring the Stamp-n-Storage ink pad holders!

Stamp-n-Storage ink pad holders for my Stampin' Up! Ink Pads, Patty Bennett's stampin loft

For about 15 years I've used a similar, custom built, ink pad holder but it was a little bulkier and I needed 2 of them stacked to store all my ink pads.  I'm so happy that now I can have all my pads just right out in front of me the way I like them!

Watch my video below for info on the great ink pad holders available at Stamp-n-Storage.

I love how streamlined these holders are, and that all my Stampin' UP! ink pads are at my fingertips!!   You can paint or stain these.. so far I've opted to keep all of my Stamp-n-Storage products natural.  Maybe someday I'll change that but I like the natural wood look for now.  Thank you so much Stamp-n-Storage for these fabulous ink pad organizers!!  It is true that you are more creative and more productive when you are organized!!

As mentioned in the video above, I have two of the "24" holders and one of the "30" holders all lined up side by side so that I can have my 4 Stampin' UP! color families displayed horizontally in front of me.  This is what works for me.  Many people prefer the vertical orientation, but do what works for you and your space!  When you go to the Stamp-n-Storage website ink pad holder page (here), you'll find several options as shown below:

Stamp-n-Storage ink pad holder options. So many to select from to fit your crafting space!

When you click the Standard Ink Pad Holders option (Circled above) you'll find the dimensions below.. you can select from any of these sizes and shapes to store from 24 to 60 ink pads.  I've circled the 2 sizes that I have (shown in the video above).

As you can see there are LOTS of options offered by Stamp-n-Storage for your ink pad storage, and this is what worked best for me.  Measure your space, count your ink pads, then find a solution that works well for you!

And because everyone should have fresh flowers at their crafting desk....

Stampin' UP! also offers an ink pad storage solution called the Color Caddy (here).  As I mentioned in the video, we all have different preferences and space requirements, so select an option that works best for your space!
